2022 Sacramento County Fair kicks off at Cal Expo. What to know

A Memorial Day weekend favorite has returned to Northern California. The Sacramento County Fair is back in action for the first time since the pandemic shut it down. The Cal Expo’s livestock area was busy Thursday morning ahead of the gates opening. Children and teens from area 4-H Clubs are preparing to show their animals at the county fair for the first time in two years. “It’s a very large deal, these kids have been waiting for two years, we were all disappointed two years ago when it got canceled, so they have been waiting two years to do this,” said Jean Davis, Elverta 4-H. “They’ve put in many hours a week working with these animals, researching, how to feed them, how to care for them, they put in many hours.”Among the highlighters for this year’s fair include the return of the demolition derby for the first time in seven years on Memorial Day. Other attractions include bull riding, monster trucks and an animatronic dinosaur exhibit.There are also concerts every night that are free with admission. Artists Queen Nation, the Ragdolls, country singer Ashley Barron and the Outlaw Mariachis are among those performing.The gates officially opened at 10 a.m. on Thursday and will remain open through Monday at Cal Expo. Vehicle entry is through Gate D at Exposition Boulevard and Challenge Way. Gate admission is located at the entrance to the Cal Expo Rodeo Arena.The fair is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. That runs from July 15 to 30.
