The Arkansas County Quorum Court held its regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday, April 12, at the courthouse in DeWitt. Arkansas County Judge Eddie Best said justices approved several agenda items, including a tax-back incentive for Riceland Foods.

“They will not have to pay taxes on some of the stuff that they bought. Hopefully, the contractors will buy some things locally. This is not a lot of money. At tops, it will probably be $2,000 worth of tax dollars,” Best said.

Riceland Foods is planning to create about 60 new jobs in Stuttgart.

“With the income that will be there for those 60 employees, we will easily get that (tax money) back really quickly for the county and for the city as well,” Best said.

Also Tuesday, justices discussed the 2020 legislative final audit report.

“When the audit report came back, any things that needed to be corrected were corrected. The quorum court passed that final audit report,” Best said.

The quorum court reviewed an ordinance for a mileage rate increase for county employees.

“The quorum court passed a mileage rate increase to 68 cents per mile for when county employees in necessity have to use their own personal vehicles. That is what the reimbursement rate will be for the employees,” Best said.

Justices reviewed another ordinance involving COVID-19 grant reimbursement funds received by the Arkansas County Detention Center.

“That grant was for $100,000. They are taking that money and putting it toward camera repairs and equipment,” Best said. “They will be getting some new cameras in the near future that will increase the safety and the health of inmates and the jailers as well.”

The next regular meeting of the Arkansas County Quorum Court will be held Tuesday, May 10, at 9:30 a.m. at the courthouse in DeWitt.
