Elevated risk for grass fires expected Memorial Day and Tuesday

Very dry, breezy conditions are expected to return to Northern California by Memorial Day.An area of high pressure is strengthening over the East Pacific. It will move closer to the coast on Sunday, setting up a persistent north wind pattern. Wind does not look exceptionally strong, but it should be steady on Memorial Day Monday and on Tuesday. That will cause the air near the ground to dry out considerably compared to recent days.The combination of dry air, dry fuels and a steady breeze will increase the risk for grass fires in the valley, coastal hills and the foothills on Monday and Tuesday. The KCRA Fire Threat Index is currently at a “moderate” level for those regions on those days. That threat level would be further elevated if new forecast data points to the potential for stronger winds. The Fire Threat Index is updated daily by the KCRA 3 weather team.Anyone with outdoor recreation plans over the holiday weekend should be especially cautious. Things like lawn equipment, trailer chains and vehicles parked on dry grass can all spark fires. People should be especially mindful when cooking or grilling outdoors.
