Mass. man arrested in carjacking of Amazon delivery vehicle

A Massachusetts man is in custody in connection with the carjacking of an Amazon delivery vehicle, according to police.Police in Malden, Massachusetts, around 15 minutes outside downtown Boston, said that at about 12:30 p.m. Thursday, dispatchers received a call from an Amazon driver that someone had tried to steal his delivery vehicle near the intersection of Main Street and Bickford Road.The Amazon driver told police he was out of the vehicle making a delivery when the suspect, identified as 42-year-old Michael Cunha, got into the Amazon vehicle and drove several blocks.Police said when Cunha got out of the vehicle, he was confronted by the Amazon driver — who called 911 — and a good Samaritan.Sister station WCVB obtained footage from a surveillance camera that showed Cunha trying to flee the scene in a parking lot.The surveillance video shows the good Samaritan trying to impede Cunha and the suspect slipping and falling to the ground in front of that bystander.The good Samaritan, Yosef Tesfaye, told WCVB’s Emily Maher that he was at his family’s restaurant, Habesha, when he saw a commotion outside.”Then I see the Amazon guy running down saying: ‘That’s the thief. That’s the thief,'” Tesfaye said. “I ran after him and he went (the other way). (Others) were just trying to block him on the other side and he just came back to me.”When Cunha stumbled to the ground, he is seen dropping several objects. Tesfaye said a knife was among those objects.”He had a knife. I saw the knife after we dropped him and I saw the knife on the (ground),” Tesfaye said.The suspect is then seen getting back to his feet before trying to flee the scene again. That is when the Amazon driver tackles the suspect to the ground.Cunha was ultimately able to evade the Amazon driver and good Samaritan and flee the scene.Malden police patrol officers and K-9 units were able to track down Cunha and arrest him following a search that lasted about 40 minutes.“We’re thankful the delivery driver is safe and wasn’t harmed during this incident. We’ll continue to work with local law enforcement during their investigation,” Amazon said in a statement.Police said Cunha will be arraigned on Friday. It is not clear what exact charges Cunha is facing at this time.

Cunha was ultimately able to evade the Amazon driver and good Samaritan and flee the scene.
