SCUSD, SCTA at odds over how to make up for time lost from strike

Following a strike involving Sacramento City Unified teachers and support staff that lasted longer than a week, the district and the Sacramento City Teachers Association are trying to come to an agreement on how to make up for lost instructional time.In a proposed memorandum, the school day would be an extra hour longer on May 19 and 26, as well as on June 2 and 9. One extra week with regular school hours would be added, pushing the last day of instruction to June 24.”Certainly, we don’t know how many students are going to show up — we can’t control for that, but we can control for creating as much certainty that we have enough staff to provide a safe learning environment. That is where we are doing everything we can to reach a resolution,” SCUSD Superintendent Jorge Aguilar said.Aguilar added that up to 25% of staff would be able to take a pre-approved leave, using personal necessity time, but beyond that, the school district wants to be staffed for those proposed extra days and hours.SCTA President David Fisher said the teachers association is holding off on signing that agreement, arguing that a provision SCUSD added is not legitimate.”It would require all the teachers that do the makeup work to relinquish their right if the district made a mistake in their pension,” Fisher said. “We don’t know why they threw that in at the last minute, but we really would appreciate the decision-makers of the district sitting down with us.”In response, Aguilar said that those who participated — members of the teachers association and the SEIU — should have known the impact the strike would have on their individual retirement benefits. He added that he’s hopeful a decision is made by Friday to avoid financial penalties of about $46 million for the learning time that was lost between March 23 and April 1.
