The Phenomenon of a Russian “Dacha”

The Phenomenon of a Russian "Dacha"

This word is hard to translate into English. But it’s meaning is the quintessence of the Russian culture like “borsch”, “okroshka”, “matryoshka”. We talk about “dacha”. A Russian dacha is a country house where people both work and rest. They normally spend all summer weekends there. In the 1990s almost each Russian family had a dacha. People grew vegetables, berries and flowers there, and surely had cosy time when the work was done. Today the majority of Russians prefer to buy veggies and fruit and spend weekends in a different way. But it seems that something truly wonderful, a very Russian phenomenon, is getting lost. This publication is full of photos of Russian dachas – from the times of Peter I to the present days.
