Three people are dead and a state police trooper was injured following a shooting at a business in rural western Maryland on Thursday, authorities said.The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded around 2:30 p.m. Thursday to the Columbia Machine INC. in Smithsburg for reports of an active shooter. Police said officers arrived and found three men dead. Police identified the victims as Mark Alan Frey, 50, Charles Edward Minnick Jr., 31, and Joshua Robert Wallace, 30.A fourth victim, Brandon Chase Michael, 42, was critically injured.Police confirmed that all of the victims and the suspect, a 23-year-old man from West Virginia, were current employees of Columbia Machine, INC.The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived, police said.Police said the trooper encountered the suspect in a vehicle in the area of Maplesville Road and Mount Aetna Road a short time later. They exchanged gunfire. Police said both were injured and taken to hospitals for treatment.The trooper suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was released from the Meritus Medical Center.Police said the suspect will remain in custody at Meritus Medical Center. His identity will not be released until charging documents are filed.The weapon used at both scenes was a semi-automatic handgun, police said. Police did not release the caliber, make and model.The motive for the shooting is still under investigation and there remains no active threat to the community.Police said there is no confirmed active threat to the community in relation to the shootings. Columbia Machine is a manufacturer of concrete products equipment, according to their website.Smithsburg is about 75 miles west of Baltimore.
